Bob Bedell, President & CEO of the Indiana
Convention & Visitors Association was presented with a Sagamore
of the Wabash Award at ISAE’s May 14th Seminar. The award was
secured and presented by ISAE Past President Wilford Butler,
CAE.
The Sagamore of the Wabash Award was created in 1945 by Indiana
Governor Ralph Gates to honor leaders and outstanding citizens of
Indiana. The term “sagamore” was used by Native American
tribes of Indiana to describe a great man or lesser chief among the
tribe. A “sagamore” was one the chief could consult for wisdom
and advice. Each governor since Gates has presented the
Sagamore certificates in their own way. Some governors have
granted many Sagamores to the most celebrated and honored sons and
daughters. Others, like our present governor, have been more
reserved, presenting fewer Sagamores to make the award more
prized.
ISAE would like to thank Wilford Bulter, CAE for securing this
prestigious award and Governor Mitch Daniels for bestowing it upon
our longtime friend and member Bob Bedell.

The IRS has answered some frequently asked questions about the
Form 990 redesign. Questions are answered on why the IRS is
redesigning the form; when the new form will be implemented; an
explanation of the increase of schedules; and more. To visit
the IRS website for these FAQs & answers, please click
here.

The IRS is asking all nonprofits to review and comment on its
draft instructions for the Form 990. ASAE feels it is
important that we unite our voices as an association community to
make positive changes to the instructions. ASAE is asking all
members to sign a letter to the IRS suggesting changes to the
instructions to prevent over-reporting. To read and sign their
letter, please click
here.
ASAE performed an in-depth examination of the concerns
surrounding the draft instructions that can be viewed by clicking
here. In short, their major concern involves the
definition of a “key employee.” The current definition would
require associations to report the compensation of an employee who
has oversight and responsibilities over a segment of the
organization, manages 5% or more of the organization’s activities or
assets, and has authority to determine at least 5% of the
organization’s compensation or budget. ASAE is concerned this
definition does not account for the diverse structures of many
associations, especially small ones.
If you have any questions, please call the ASAE Public Policy
Department at (202) 626-2703.

Are you taking the CAE Exam on December 5th, 2008? The

application deadline, you can submit it no later than October
10, 2008 for an additional $100 fee. For more information

Want to help a colleague learn about the benefits of
membership by joining ISAE?

In an effort to inform members of the valuable resources
available on our members-only section of the ISAE Web site, we will
highlight a different document each month. This month, we will
review the handouts provided by Bob Harris, CAE at our May 14th
Seminar.
How do you achieve a perfect association? Bob Harris
presented eye-opening information on how to create great policies,
including a conflict of interest policy. Bob also provided a
65 page workbook to the attendees on everything from strategic
planning to disaster planning. To view these items, log on to
the members-only section of the ISAE Web site at www.isae.org/member.
To view the “Anatomy of a Conflict of Interest Policy”, go to the
Board of Directors section. It is listed under “Conflict of
Interest Policies”. To view the “Anatomy of a Policy
Statement”, go to the Board of Directors section. It is listed
under “Policies and Procedures Manuals/Documents”. The entire
workbook is located in Administration under “Creating Policies,
Agreements, Contracts, Etc.”.
Members are also encouraged to contribute items for the
members-only section of the ISAE website. These can only be
accessed by ISAE members. Forward your policies to Laura Frank
at lfrank@isae.org.
