MISSION: ISAE exists to support and strengthen association professionals' success

Doing, and keeping, your job is getting tougher every year. CEOs of non-profits and associations are often an easy target for volunteers’ frustrations. Even if your honeymoon has been blissful, today’s rapidly shifting environment means change can occur with the next President.

Attend this session to learn:
• Answers to the tough questions you were afraid to ask…or didn’t know who to ask.
• What to do to move your organization forward and deal with tough issues.
• Bottom line survival strategies for a new CEO.

Collecting and using membership research data in decision-making is a critical function for successful association management. This session will describe a case study of how a mid-sized association initiated the use of marketing research, the process for collecting and analyzing this research and how the insights gained from the research were incorporated into the day-to-day decisions of the association. In addition, practical insights to guide association strategy on the inexpensive collection and analysis of information will be discussed.

Key topics will include the following:

  1. What was the association's situation and what lead to the decision to conduct research? How was this decision made by staff and volunteer leadership?

  1. What areas of inquiry were identified that were important to answering the association's strategic questions?

  1. What factors were important to determining the final methodology to collect the information?

  1. How were the results of the research communicated to leadership in a way that facilitated decision-making?

  1. How were the results of the research used and how has the information been incorporated into the decision-making process of the association?

  1. How does the association evaluate the return on investment of research activities and determine the value of their research investment?

  2. What are tips and techniques for the practical collection, reporting and use of research information?

  • Area Health Agencies Receive Funding - According to Inside Indiana Business, five health agencies in Indiana will split a grant from the U.S. Health and Human Services Administration’s HRSA Health Center Initiative, totaling more than $1.7 million.  As part of the grant, the Indiana Primary Health Care Association (IPHCA) will receive $80,000 to plan and develop a health center for Carroll, Newton, and Posey Counties.  This will ensure that many Indiana residents will be able to get treatment and access that treatment close to home.  Lisa Winternheimer is the Executive Director of IPHCA and an ISAE Board Member.

  • Indy’s Best and Brightest, sponsored by Junior Achievement, selected the top professionals under 40 in their industries.  Two ISAE members were among this year’s finalistas.  Amber R. Van Til, Vice President of Government Relations for the Indiana Bankers Association, was a finalist in the Banking and Financial Services area.  Henry Kurkowski, Partner and Director of Business Development for eWireless, was a finalist in the Technology area.

  • Alex & Jenni Meyers are the proud parents of a baby boy!  Will Meyers was born September 12, 2007 and weighed 5 lbs. 6 oz. and was 19 inches long.  Jenni (Metzinger) Meyers formerly served on the ISAE staff and is the current Director of Sales for Odyssey Quest and Raybourn Group International.

  • Jillian Dampier has accepted a sales position with French Lick Resort & Casino.  She is now working with the Ohio corporate market.

The early deadline for applications for the December 7, 2007 CAE exam has now passed.  Exam applications can still be mailed by the extended deadline of October 5th, 2007 for an additional $100.  ISAE will offer study sessions prior to the December exam.  Please notify Laura Frank at the ISAE office if you plan to sit for the December exam.

Beginning January 1, 2009, a new IRS rule that revamps the tax code will compel non-profits to take greater responsibility for overseeing 403(b) retirement plans. This move will bring the administration of 403(b) plans in line with 401(k) plans, forcing sponsors to prepare written plan documents and become the chief administrators and primary trustees of their plan.  To read more about this new IRS rule at www.cfo.com, please click here.

In an effort to inform members of the valuable resources available on our members-only section of the ISAE Web site, we will highlight a different document each month. This month, we will review affinity agreements.

Affinity agreements enable a tax-exempt organization to receive a fee for allowing a business to use its name, logo, or membership list to endorse products or services. If structured correctly, the income earned through these agreements can be classified as royalty income and is not taxable

To view affinity agreement samples, log on to the members-only section of the ISAE Web site at www.isae.org/member.  Samples messages can be found in the Administration section.

Members are also encouraged to contribute items for the members-only section of the ISAE website.  These can only be accessed by ISAE members.  Forward your policies to Laura Frank at lfrank@isae.org

In order to continue the much requested discussion on Indiana Non-Profit Law, each month Synergy will address a question from members pertaining to the current Indiana law.  As always, we encourage you to ask your corporate attorney for clarification.

Q:  How does the Indiana Non-Profit Law define "voting power”?

A:  The Indiana Non-Profit Law states:

IC 23-17-2-28
"Voting power"

Sec. 28. (a) "Voting power" means the total number of votes entitled to be cast for the election of directors at the time the determination of voting power is made.
    (b) The term does not include a vote that is contingent upon the happening of a condition or an event that has not occurred at the time. If a class is entitled to vote as a class for directors, the determination of voting power of the class shall be based on the percentage of the number of directors the class is entitled to elect out of the total number of authorized directors.

To view Indiana Law related to Non-Profit Corporations, click http://www.in.gov/legislative/ic/code/title23/ar17/

E-mail ISAE staff if you have a question for next month’s issue.

ISAE is working to explore possible amendments to the Indiana Non-Profit Act that could benefit Indiana associations and their members.  If you are interested in joining this effort, please email us at info@isae.org.
