As many of you begin your 2009 program planning and execution there is something that you should have on your radar when it comes to the speaker at your next meeting or event. The content or intellectual property, which is defined as the original expression of ideas, as well as symbols and words that represent the products or services of a company or person, are just that property. There are a number legal issues that surround intellectual property and the proper uses of intellectual property. What most organizations aren’t aware of is that they are responsible for the content of their hired speaker. In order to make sure that you and your association stay on the right side of the line you should always have your hired speaker sign a release. This action will make sure that your organization is held harmless for any improper use of intellectual property. If your association is in need of this type of form click here for an example of an intellectual content release form.

Monthly Quote & Focus:
Even though this year will prove to be a challenge for many individuals, businesses and industries we all have the power to do at least one thing…not worry! I know you are saying I am crazy or how is that even a possibility? It is simple really all we need to do is to turn what would be or worries into work. Work is a healthy and productive outlet. So instead of focusing on what you can’t get done today, focus on what you can get done today. At the end of the day, week or even year you may just find that all of the things that you could have worried about didn’t really matter. This thought is captured perfectly in the following quote:

“It is not work that kills men, it is worry. Work is healthy; you can hardly put more on a man than he can bear. But worry is rust upon the blade. It is not movement that destroys the machinery, but friction.”
Henry Ward Beecher

In an effort to inform members of the valuable resources available on our members-only section of the ISAE Web site, we highlight a different document each month. This month, we are highlighting the Criteria for ISAE Board Action in the Board of Directors section.

This document focuses on the questions that your task forces and committees should have the answers to before they bring an item before the board for review. This is a new document that ISAE will provide to each of our committee chairs and task force leaders to implement. The end goal is that you will have a more productive board meeting and be able to take action more quickly having all of the facts presented to your board at one time. Hopefully presenting the questions ahead of time to your committees and task forces that they will be faced with they will be prepared to offer the answers that your board is looking for.

Members are also encouraged to contribute items for the members-only section of the ISAE website. These can only be accessed by ISAE members. Forward your policies to Leslie Murphy at lmurphy@isae.org or Katie Voorhest at kvoorhest@isae.org.

HR Issues Association Executives Must Know
Managing people is managing people-whether in a retail store, a manufacturing plant, or in an association. So it is not surprising to find that a list of key HR concerns, as identified by a group of association executives, mirrors the issues you would find listed by just about any other group of managers. Join us for a discussion of issues that may sound simple, but can in the real world consume a great deal of your precious management time and energy. How you deal with these issues is critical in your efforts to minimize risk for your organizations.
