Happy New Year!

Mark your calendars. The annual ISAE Legislative Luncheon
will take place on January 17th, 2008 at the Hilton
Indianapolis Downtown. Current legislative leaders
from both parties and both chambers of the Indiana General Assembly
will highlight priorities for the upcoming session and answer
questions of concern. Jim Shella of WISH-TV will once again
moderate our panel of Indiana legislators. We'll also provide
an update on ISAE's legislative initiative to revise Indiana's
Nonprofit law.
Gain exposure to members and legislators at the 2008
Legislative Luncheon! Last year's outstanding
attendance of 230 indicates this is the event to see and be
seen! Sponsorship of this event is not only an excellent way
to increase your name recognition among associations and
legislators, but also supports the work of ISAE. For only
$650, you'll receive a table of 10, signage at the event,
and your logo on our promotional pieces and emails. If you are
interested in sponsoring, please contact Laura Frank at lfrank@isae.org.

or 2) know that attaining the CAE is something you want to do in the
next 2-3 years. Current CAE's are also invited to attend to

Despite predictions of snow, over 230 members and their guests
showed up for a star-studded evening at The Mansion at Oak Hill on
December 4, 2007. After a cocktail reception, Dave Stevens of
Stevens & Stevens kicked off the night as the emcee.

ISAE members also donated a number of items to the Teachers'
Treasures, including 1,158 pencils; 555 ink pens; 414 markers; 468
colored pencils; and 38 bottles of glue. Jane Howard,
Executive Director of Teachers' Treasures, the charity for the
evening, shared the following unedited quotes from a package of
thank-you notes from elementary students:
Dear Friends, Thanks for the pencils and pens, because I use
these all the time, non stop. I hope you keep sending
them. My favorite is the mechanical pencil we could use more
of those. But thanks for the things you gave us.
Bye. Sincerely, Kenedy

Did you know ISAE made it to 500
members? At the 2004 STAR Awards, 2005 ISAE
President Kevin Mayeux said, "If you don't measure it, it doesn't
count.let's aim high." With that, Kevin told an association
with only 302 members that it could and would reach 500
members. At the 2007 STAR Awards, we celebrated reaching 500
members. How did we grow our association to this
number? We like to think it's our great
professional development programs; informative newsletters, emails
and the members-only section of the website; and lobbying through
our united voice for Indiana associations. Let's keep
on moving up. Invest in yourself today by renewing
your membership with ISAE.
We are excited to present new online dues renewals! If you

In an effort to inform members of the valuable resources
available on our members-only section of the ISAE Web site, we will
highlight a different document each month. This month, we will
review Disaster Plans.
Having a Disaster Plan is an important tool for your non-profit
or association. This plan helps protect your organization in
the case of a natural or man-made disaster. The best defense
against these disasters is preparedness. A Disaster Plan will help
mitigate the effects of these disasters as well as emergency
response and emergency recovery plans. Understanding the many
different types of disasters that could occur helps one prepare for
these disasters. Also, it helps point out weaknesses that might be
present at your association and allows time to correct these before
a disaster.
To view a sample Disaster Plan, log on to the
members-only section of the ISAE Web site at www.isae.org/member. A
sample Disaster Plan can be found in the Organizational Planning
section.
Members are also encouraged to contribute items for the
members-only section of the ISAE website. These can only be
accessed by ISAE members. Forward your policies to Laura Frank
at lfrank@isae.org.

The IRS issued the 2008 optional standard mileage rates used to
calculate the deductible costs of driving for business, charitable,
medical or moving purposes. Beginning January 1, 2008, the
standard mileage rates will be 50.5 cents per mile for business
travel, up from 48.5 cents per mile for 2007. The new rate for
charitable driving purposes is 14 cents per
mile.

According to cfo.com, in a
recent survey of nonprofit executives and board members, Grant
Thornton found that 92 percent have implemented new accounting
policies and procedures within the past few years, compared to only
59 percent who last year said they had new policies in place.
Nonprofits have also been motivated by changes to the IRS Form 990.
The Internal Revenue Service has recently made changes to this form,
which nonprofits with more than $25,000 in revenue are required to
fill out each year. The IRS proposed further revisions to the form
earlier this year. For more information, or to read the entire
article, click

In order to continue the much requested discussion on Indiana
Non-Profit Law, each month Synergy will address a question
from members pertaining to the current Indiana law. As
always, we encourage you to ask your corporate attorney for
clarification.
Q: We have members that have
not renewed their dues. Can we drop them from our
membership?
A: The Indiana Non-Profit law states
the following:
IC 23-17-7-7 Liability for
obligations; transferee's liability 23-17-7-7 Sec. 7.
(a) A member may become liable to the corporation for dues,
assessments, or fees. However: (1) an article of incorporation or
a bylaw provision; or (2) a resolution adopted by the board of
directors; authorizing or imposing dues, assessments, or fees
does not create liability to pay the obligation. However,
nonpayment constitutes grounds for expelling or suspending the
member or suspending or terminating the membership. The validity
of mandatory membership and the validity of a lien imposed by a
recorded declaration of covenant or a similar commitment running
with the real property or an interest in the real property is not
affected by this subsection. (b) A permitted transferee of a
membership having notice at the time of the transfer of unpaid
dues, assessments, or fees of the transferor is liable to the
corporation for unpaid dues, assessments, or fees. However, a
transferee who is an executor, an administrator, a guardian, a
trustee, a receiver, or a pledgee is not personally liable for
any unpaid consideration due to the corporation. An heir or
a legatee who is a permitted transferee may surrender the
membership to the corporation without incurring any liability for
any unpaid consideration. As added by P.L.179-1991, SEC.1.
Amended by P.L.96-1993, SEC.7.
