An Eye on Association Professionals

Saying Goodbye: ISAE is saying good bye to long time member and Past President, Kevin Mayeux, CAE. Kevin has been a valuable member over the years, dedicating his time and services through various volunteer roles including President of the Board of Directors from 2006-2007 during which he grew ISAE to our largest membership numbers in the history of the organization. Kevin will embark on a new journey after serving as the Executive of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity for 10 years. He will be joining the Institute of Internal Auditors as the Chief Operating Officer. As the COO he will oversee North American operations, as well as supervise the certification, event planning, communication, and membership functions of the IIA. The ISAE family wishes Kevin the best!

Congratulations: Fifty-seven association executives have recently earned their Certified Association Executive (CAE) credential from the CAE Commission of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), joining more than 3,900 industry leaders worldwide. The Summer 2010 class of CAEs successfully completed the CAE examination administered nationwide on May 7, 2010.

They will be honored along with the Winter 2010 class of CAEs during ASAE & The Center for Association Leadership's 2010 Annual Meeting & Exposition in Los Angeles, August 21-24. Click here to view list of recipients.

What You Need To Know

ASAE PROGRAM TO HIGHLIGHT 1099 ISSUES:
As reported in last week’s Inroads, the IRS is seeking comments on a new requirement in the health care reform bill that will require all businesses and tax-exempt organizations to issue a Form 1099 to vendors from whom they buy goods totaling $600 or more annually. To educate the association community on the requirements as well as solicit feedback and concerns, ASAE will hold a program specifically on the 1099 reporting in September.

The program, titled “The New 1099 Requirement and Why It Will Impact Your Association,” will be held in the ASAE Conference Center Sept. 15 from 1:30 – 2:30 PM.  Presenting on the topic will be Charles Tate CPA, Managing Partner of Tate & Tryon CPAs and Consultants, as well as Debbie Kosnett and Subrina Wood, also of Tate & Tryon. Attendees can participate in person or on-the-phone. More information and registration can be found here.

To meet the 1099 requirement, businesses and other entities will have to keep detailed records of all purchases by vendors throughout the year. Payments to associations and other tax-exempt organizations would be exempt from the reporting requirement, however. Comments to the IRS on the 1099 reporting requirement are due Sept. 29 and can be sent electronically to Notice.Comments@irscounsel.treas.gov. Please refer to the IRS Notice for more information.

IRS Invites Comments on the New 1099 Requirement
The IRS is seeking comments on a new requirement in the health care reform bill enacted in March that will require all businesses and tax-exempt organizations to issue a Form 1099 to vendors from whom they buy goods totaling $600 or more annually.

The new requirement, which will take effect beginning in 2012, is expected to have broad reach and, according to the National Taxpayer Advocate, "may impose significant compliance burdens on businesses, charities and government agencies."

According to a Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) analysis, about 40 million businesses and other entities will be subject to the new requirement. TAS expressed concern in its mid-year report to Congress late last week that the reporting burden on businesses "may turn out to be disproportionate as compared with any resulting improvement in tax compliance."
