A Message From the President Linda Shinn, CAE
The ISAE priorities for 2011 are membership, leadership and money. In this message I want to address the subject of membership and in subsequent messages I will address the issues of leadership and money. As we focus on these three priorities, we will not only consider the implications for ISAE membership but how what we do can be passed along to your membership. In other words, can what we do be played forward by our members and their organizations?
Like you, we are concerned about delivering value to our members. The ISAE value proposition is to give you, our members, the resources that help you solve problems specific to being a leader of an association operating in Indiana. We work to help make you more successful by offering a variety of continuing education or information programs, networking opportunities, and a government relations/advocacy program. Yet, we know the days of offering one more program, one more discount, or one more networking opportunity won’t work. In other words, no more business as usual.
As we try to figure out how to continue to improve our value to members, we will have to address the following questions.
- Why do we do what we do? Everything needs a fresh look.
- Given what we do, what’s in it for the members?
- What’s going on in the current environment that will likely inform what we have to do tomorrow?
- How can we innovate?
- What is our “wow” factor?
- What should we stop doing?
- How can we be faster to market?
You can help us by giving some feedback on the following question: “ISAE will make me more successful by______________.”
The ISAE Board has agreed to take a different approach to membership recruitment. We have identified a “top 20 list” of member prospects. Each member of the Board will personally visit one or two of these prospects and tell their personal stories about the importance of ISAE to us as association professionals. We will each make the “ask” hoping to entice those on the list to join us. We will let you know how this strategy works out. Meantime, we look forward to hearing from you.
ICVA Names New CEO
After a strategic three-month nationwide search, the Indianapolis Convention & Visitors Association (ICVA) announces Leonard Hoops as its new president & CEO. Hoops most recently served as executive vice president & chief customer officer for the San Francisco Travel Association, the city’s official convention and tourism organization.
“With $3 billion in new tourism-related developments now online, Indianapolis has arrived as a first-tier destination, truly competing in the national arena. Leonard’s proven sales results, extensive marketing expertise, and strong convention industry knowledge make him the ideal person to take Indianapolis to the next level and capitalize on the city’s new investments,” said Michael Browning, chairman of the board of the ICVA.

Young Professionals Perspective: The Real Life Balancing Act
By: ISAE Headquarters
Finding a balance between work, home life and everything else in between is something everyone strives for but very few seem to achieve. With this comes more stress and added pressure to perform at what may seem like unattainable levels. Why is it that we think we can “do it all” while still maintaining some sense of sanity? With more and more young professionals entering the work force and smart phones attached to all of us constantly buzzing with emails or a reminder for your child’s next soccer practice, it seems like the “Real Life Balancing Act” gets harder to achieve. We are trying to do everything for everyone all the while trying to prove to ourselves that we can do it with ease. No wonder time management is such a hard concept for all!
We were fortunate enough to have CJ McClanahan come into the office to speak to our entire staff about time management. His entertaining speaking style really brought light to the fact that we all have issues when it comes to balancing all aspects of our life. Whether we like to admit it or not, we can all improve on a few things to try and make things a little less crazy for ourselves. Without giving away too much from CJ’s presentation, since he will be speaking at ISAE’s Annual Convention on this exact topic, here are a few pointers to work on throughout your day to help with your own balance act.
His first speaking point was re-defining success for ourselves. It is becoming more apparent that we are a society that tends to do things for others before we do anything for ourselves. We need to figure out where we want to be in our own lives before we can fully commit to pleasing others. His second topic was the level of commitment we need to be at for everything we do. There are times we just need to learn to say ‘No’ before moving onto anything else. If we were all to do this, don’t you think we would be a little less stressed and not feel so overwhelmed all the time? Easier said than done, I know…
Learn to “take back your day” so you can find time for yourself. As hard as it may be, we need to learn to give in and let others help us. According to Christine Loomis’ article Balancing Act (2011), we need to identify our ‘go to’ people at work and home and use them. We need to give up the idea that we are the only ones that can do something. Once again, easier said than done!
If you want to learn more about balancing your life, work and everything else make sure to come to ISAE’s Annual Convention on July 13-14. CJ McClanahan will entertain you as well as teach you a little bit more on how to manage your time, while keeping your sanity!

Grassley wants Estimate of Non-Profit Tax Exemption
As Senate tax writers continue to look at ways to make the tax code simpler and fairer for individuals and businesses, Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA) recently suggested Congress first calculate the cost of the nonprofit tax exemption, which is not currently considered an expenditure.
Grassley, who long used his position as chair and then ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee to scrutinize various charitable scandals and nonprofit governance issues, said at a Senate Finance hearing on tax reform this month that the nonprofit sector has experienced tremendous growth in recent years and warrants congressional review. According to the Bureau of National Affairs (BNA), Grassley said Congress should specifically consider whether fee-for-service organizations such as hospitals and universities should continue to enjoy the same tax exemption as other types of charities.
“Let me be clear ... I am not referring to those charities that are on the ground feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless,” Grassley said at the hearing. “I’m talking about those charities which there may be no discernible difference between commercial, for-profit entities.”

Why Today's Associations Must Prove Their ROI
By: Ed Rigsby, CSP
Your membership organization is most likely delivering quite a bit of value to the members. Unfortunately, very few of your members know about the real-dollar value. In reviewing, yet another, association magazine there is a two-page article about this particular association in which the virtues are explained for the members. The sub-headlines are: education, a new inspection initiative, distributor best practices, and (of course) the annual convention. It was a great feel-good, warm, and fuzzy article about the association. However, to quote the 1970’s Wendy’s TV commercial campaign tagline, “Where’s the beef?”
