Young Professionals Perspective: The Generational Sandwich
By: Katie Riggs, CMP
You know the old saying stuck between a rock and a hard place. This saying can mean a lot of different things for a lot of different people, but in a number of young professional’s careers today, the rock could represent a Millennial staffer and the hard place a Baby Boomer boss. With different experiences and views on everything from communicating styles to technology this can pose a challenge for the person stuck in the middle…YOU!
The concept of managing while being managed is certainly not new, but now more than ever, with more generations in the work force at the same time, it is posing more of a challenge than ever. If you are like me, some days you might feel like you spend more time navigating the proper communication methods than actually relaying the message. So what is the answer? Unfortunately, there is no magic wand that you can wave and as much as you may wish to only work with people like yourself, that will not work either. The solutions I have recently implemented are pretty simple and they will give you a jump to turning the run away train around.

Scholarships Available for
American Associations Day 2011
American Associations Day is quickly approaching and I encourage you to register today! Action in D.C. is heating up as Congress will begin considering issues such as tax reform and the 1099 repeal, and we need you and your colleagues to give an association perspective on these debates. Your meeting could be the critical one that helps repeal the new 1099 provision or keeps a nonprofit exemption safe, so I ask you to register today for the fly-in and bring a colleague.
To make the trip easier, ASAE still has a limited number of $300 scholarships available to outside-the-Beltway attendees. Just check the box on the registration form to apply; the reimbursement helps especially smaller associations to afford the trip.
For more information, including a schedule, tips for the trip and basic questions around the event, visit www.thepowerofa.org/flyin or contact Robert Hay (202.626.2788/rhay@asaenet.org). Make plans to come to DC, March 29-30 (or just March 30 for the one-day program) and be a leader for the association community.

Distinguishing Mission, Vision & Values Statements
By; Bob Harris, CAE

The statements “frame” the organization --- guiding board, staff and public to compare and contrast one organization’s brand-platform from another.
The statements are usually fine-tuned or revised at the strategic planning process.
