Letter from the President Linda Shinn, FASAE,CAE
ENGAGING NEW LEADERS…HOLDING ON TO SEASONED ONES
Linda J. Shinn, FASAE, CAE, President
Last week my friend Lily joined 68 others in a soup kitchen in Indianapolis to feed the homeless. My colleague Evelyn provided grief counseling at a local hospice
My business partner held a reception for 35 women on Emily’s list. My brother
and his fellow architectural committee members worked all night to refurbish the elevators in their condominium building. None of these people were paid to do any of this. Why did they do it? Because they have an interest in and a passion for something that is going to add value to their businesses, their profession, their homes…or themselves.
In fact, in 2010 "about 62 million people volunteered through or for an organization at least once between September 2009 and September 2010." Women continue to volunteer at a higher rate than men and 35-44 year olds were most likely to volunteer while those in their early twenties were least likely to volunteer. Whites volunteered at a higher rate than blacks or Asians. Individuals with higher levels of education volunteer at higher rates than those with a high school diploma or less. (Bureau of Labor Statistics, Volunteering in the United States, 2010; released January 26, 2011…accessed March 14, 2011).
The estimated dollar value of volunteer time for 2009 was $20.85 per hour. The Corporation for National and Community Service reported that Americans gave "volunteer service worth about $169 billion in 2009." (Independent Sector, http://independentsector.org/volunteering time; accessed March 14, 2011.)
The stories and the statistics convince me that volunteering is alive and well today. Whether engaging new volunteers or new leaders in our organizations or keeping volunteers and leaders already on board engaged, keep the following strategies in mind. CONTINUE READING >>

Young Professionals Perspective: Are Great Leaders Born or Made?
By: Katie Riggs, CMP
As a growing professional who reads industry magazines on a regular basis and even shares the articles with co-workers, members and friends, it might be surprising to most that I have always struggled to read a book cover to cover no matter the content. It has long since been my desire to overcome this, as I believe that growing professionally through reading, peer to peer networking and also attending trainings is vital to becoming or continuing to be a successful leader no matter what industry you are in.
Leaders come in many shapes and sizes, and while it has been said that people are born to be great leaders I believe that it takes more than genetics to be great. Recently, I was evaluating my leadership capabilities and what I need to do to be a better leader to my staff and volunteers in my current role and also looking at what would make me a better leader in the future. For me I already engage myself regularly in educational trainings and network weekly with my peers and mentors so that leaves one area that I was seriously lacking in…..reading! I am sure I am not the only person that has had trouble with becoming an avid reader, so I took some advice from co-workers and friends.
First, I sought a book authored by a person I already followed and, in a way, admire. Reading about the growth of this person into a business leader has kept my interest well beyond chapter 1. Second, I chose a format to read the book that was conducive to me and my learning style. Third, I have started setting aside time to read each day. It might only be 15 minutes on a given day, but this is the time I spend with just my book. It is a guaranteed 15 minutes a day I am investing in myself and my growth as a leader. These simple steps have gotten me almost to the end of my first book in just a few short weeks.
"Leadership cannot really be taught. It can only be learned."
