Young Professionals Perspective: Go Green, Cut Costs!

By: Molly Noonan

Everywhere we turn, we hear the word “green.” Rightfully so, it is a marketers favorite talking point. Over the many years that we have populated the planet, we have done some serious damage. Most people are in agreeance it is crucial that we take the necessary steps to try and slow down the upward cycle of environmental harm. But if we are honest, it isn’t only about saving the planet. Individuals can save a great deal of money by being green. If you care about saving your organization and yourself from unnecessary spending, and just maybe saving your planet while you’re at it, there are a few small changes you can make to your daily work life.

Bring a reusable cup and lunchbox.
If you are a coffee drinker, bring a container for your coffee and a separate container for water or other cold beverages. By bringing your lunch in a reusable lunchbox, you are steering clear of Styrofoam, plastic and paper containers you would use and throw away if getting take-out.

Carpool.
Ask around the office. There may be someone looking to cut down on spending and cutting down on gas usage is a great way to cut spending and decrease emissions.

Cut down on paper usage.
If you have access, bring a laptop to meetings to avoid printing out presentation materials and notes. Whenever you do have to print, be sure to recycle. Position recycling cans at or near every desk and in high traffic areas.

Adjust Lighting.
Turn off the conference room lights when meetings are over, or install occupancy sensors or timers on lights so they turn off when no one is using the room. Not everyone has this luxury, but use natural lighting to your advantage whenever possible.

Set your computer to hibernate.
Edit your computer’s settings to go on “standby” or in “hibernation” mode when you have not been active for more than 10 minutes. This reduces the amount of energy you are using. Also, turn your computer completely off when leaving the office for the day.

Share these tips.
Mentioning to co-workers simple ways that your office can be more environmentally friendly can go a long way. If they aren’t keen on being green, remind them that reducing, reusing and recycling saves money!
