The Continuous Marketing Dilemma
Marketing your organization can be a lot to handle at any given time—making sure you’re targeting the right groups, putting together messages that will draw people in, deciding which format to deliver those messages in, etc. Throw being in the middle of a recession into the mix and the situation can quickly become overwhelming.
When money is tight it is often a person’s first instinct to cut spending everywhere possible and marketing dollars tend to be some of the first to disappear. However, cutting communication with your members or clients can be a mistake that your organization will be paying for long after the recession has passed. In times like these it is more important than ever to be an invaluable resource and strive to meet customer needs. Instead of trimming away at your marketing efforts because you think you can’t afford them, consider that you may not be able to afford being without them.
There are three important things that must be done during difficult times. First, know what your target market wants. This can change frequently so make sure you are continuously monitoring their needs and adapting to them. Secondly, stop wasting resources on the stuff they don’t care about just because it has always been done. Lastly, let them know what you are doing for them. They will appreciate your efforts and your regular communication with them will never leave them wondering what the benefits of their relationship with you are.

Follow the Money …Not-For-Profit Finance for Non-Finance Professionals
This is a must attend seminar for all association professionals, especially those who want to keep their jobs!! The number one reason that association professionals lose their jobs is due to poor financial management skills. Being able to calculate the numbers and put together the budget is simply not enough. You need to understand how to effectively communicate what the numbers mean. In order to be able to accomplish this you must have the ability to understand the language of accounting and finance, how to direct a financial operation, how to read financial statements, recognize danger signs and present financial information to the board and staff you will regret it.
The presenter for this seminar Ed McMillan, CPA, CAE, the Non-Profit Guru, literally wrote the book on financial management for not-for-profit organizations. The seminar will be a combination of lecture and interactive exercises that will incorporate the following ideas:
-
Essential differences between commercial and not-for-profit organizations
-
How the primary financial statements are prepared and how they relate to each other

Have you looked around your office lately and known something was missing? Maybe you can’t put your finger on it, but it may just be something that we talk about almost everyday with our spouses, kids, friends, and co-workers---trust. Such a small and simple yet perfect word so why is it that it seems to be that distrust always seems to be lurking in the work place? One way to help alleviate this is to make sure that you are taking the time to run an operation with a high level of transparency. Make sure that every member of the staff feels involved by operating openly and truthfully. The cloud of distrust may not instantly disappear, but you sure will be able to see the sun!

Assessing the Negative Impact of Problem Experience
on Member Loyalty
By Larry J. Seibert, Ph.D.
Over years of conducting numerous satisfaction/loyalty research programs for many types of organizations, we have consistently found that problems weaken the relationship between an organization and its constituents, whether they are referred to as clients, customers, patients or members. We also know that different types of problems negatively impact the relationship to varying degrees. Some problems will only cause minimal damage to the relationship if resolved, while other types of problems must be prevented from occurring.
In order to determine the negative impact problem experience has on member loyalty, there are four issues that must be addressed: (1) the prevalence of problems, (2) the percentage of problems that go unreported, (3) the extent of damage that is done to the relationship if the problem occurs but is resolved, and (4) the extent of damage that is done if problems go unresolved. By understanding the last two (damage done by resolved problems and damage done by unresolved problems) an association can efficiently allocate its limited resources to eliminating problems where it must, and resolving problems in areas where problem elimination is not necessary.
Including the following four questions in your member satisfaction/loyalty survey will allow you to determine the impact that various types of problems have on your member relationships:
1. Have you experienced a significant problem when dealing with XYZ in the past six months?
2. Please briefly describe the nature of the problem.
3. Did you report the problem to anyone at XYZ?
4. Was the problem resolved to your satisfaction?
The Association Executive As Seen by...
The Member: The Fount of all Wisdom, the universal help desk, the place to go with odd questions, a human Wikipedia about my profession or industry.
The Member’s Administrative Assistant: The annoying person who keeps sending these dues bills, conference registration forms and legislative alerts that overflow my trash bin.
The Staff Member: That over-paid slacker who’s always out having lunch at someone else’s expense, or on a trip to some nice location, who takes credit for all my hard work.
The Association President: The best go-for I ever had, but needs constant, daily supervision to be sure all the details are taken care of.
The Hotel Sales Representative: The rude person who hung up on me just because I called three times last week, but whom I must smooze as long as there’s any chance the association might bring its conference to my hotel.
The Legislator: A potential source of campaign funds if I can keep them guessing about my position on their bill.
The Committee Chair: A person waiting idly by the phone, hoping I’ll call with a new project to relieve the boredom.
The Exec’s Administrative Assistant: A nice person who shouldn’t be allowed out without a minder.
The Board: A dreadfully tight-fisted naysayer, who keeps complaining that all the wonderful things we want to do aren’t in the Budget or the Strategic Plan.
The Finance Committee: A hopeless spendthrift who’s responsible for the association going into the red this year, by not sticking to the Strategic Plan and the Budget.
The IT Director: A neo-Luddite, who can’t use a computer as well as the average five-year-old.
The Volunteer: A Spammer who should be cut off from the computer and e-mail.
The Lawyer: My deep-pockets lunch, if only he/she will make one little mistake.
The Spouse: Seen? I ain’t seen anybody around the house lately. I might as well be single.
Him/Herself: A carnival entertainer, running back and forth keeping 20 plates spinning, juggling several balls and other objects, while participating in a conference call on a headset and answering e-mail on a Blackberry.
Society: The glue.
