A Young Professionals Prospective:
Getting Down to Business

In an age where every company or organization is marketing that they offer the best product or service, the real question is how does your association or company get noticed? As a late 20 something, I am at the age where companies and organizations are constantly attempting to get me on board with their cause, product or service. They would like me to buy a house, donate money, join as a member, or volunteer my time. They all seem to think they know me well enough to know that “we' are a perfect match. Most of time that simply isn't the case, but for those that get it right, what is the difference? I will tell you….they make it about me!

The problem with most attempts to get “buy in' from individuals is there is simply no focus on the individual. This is a key element in association membership. It doesn't matter if the association is trade, individual membership, or any other type of association. The focus has to be on what your association provides of value to each member. This could be education, networking or simply the online directory or newsletter you publish. What do you offer that meets their needs that they simply can't get somewhere else? If I want/need a pickup truck and the dealership is trying to sell me a sports car, they are likely to be unsuccessful in making the sale. So when it comes to recruiting or retaining new members, remember don't sell the sports car when what they want/need is the pick up truck!

Uncertain Times Call For Proactive Planning

One thing is certain the economy is simply different and while it will rebound eventually, it will never be the same. In this new environment associations not only have to cut costs, but also invest in the future in order to ensure that the association remains a viable, vibrant source of information and inspiration to the members. There are a number of organizations that are doing just that.

While keeping the economic state in the for front of their mind, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons has made it their goal to provide economic relief to their members and to encourage continued innovation. To do so, they implemented a set of new policies including no dues/program cost increases, sharper negotiation with hotels, developing more online programming, and using electronic handouts.

Like the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, other associations need to plan a bold new strategy for 2010. There are key elements in planning your new strategy, no matter what your size or type of organization

  1. Reexamine your program development process.

  2. Develop an education needs assessment.

  3. Clearly understand how member demographics relate to program needs.

  4. Take stock in the world around you.

For more information see the October issue of Forum magazine for the article, “Planning Association Education in a Culture of Uncertainty', written by CrossConnect speaker Debra Bachman-Zabloudil, CAE, President of The Learning Studio Inc.
